Roadmapping Grand Challenges: Diversity, commonalities, and socio-technology transitions

Summary

This project explores the use of roadmapping as an appropriate tool and approach for charting developmental and translational pathways for Grand Challenge initiatives, and for testing whether or not a technology or technological aim should be pursued as a grand challenge. The first part of the project looks at the academic and policy literature on grand challenges, capturing both the diversity of grand challenge initiatives and the core design elements that constitute a Grand Challenge. Second, the project places grand challenge initiatives within broader socio-technology transitions, looking at how our understanding of such transitions can inform the design of both a Grand Challenge initiative and the corresponding foresight/roadmapping approach used to guide and operationalise such initiatives.
