Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Grand Challenges

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Grand Challenges: A roadmapping experiment for the University of Cambridge

Summary

This project explores and considers the various ways in which advances in artificial intelligence (AI) can contribute toward addressing grand societal goals, i.e., Grand Challenges, with the aim of informing the University of Cambridge’s AI research strategy. In doing so, the first part of the project looks at the academic and policy literature on grand challenges, identifying recent Grand Challenge initiatives where (1) advances in AI are sought to address Grand Challenges; (2) the Grand Challenges of AI are identified and pursued; and (3) AI is identified as a key enabling technology, e.g. synthetic biology. A second part of the project is to carry-out a roadmapping exercise on AI for Grand Challenges with the University of Cambridge’s AI research community.
