From the IfM to the 2024 Paralympic Games
The 2024 Paralympic Games are underway in Paris, and among the 4,400 athletes gathered to compete is a doctoral researcher at the IfM who participates for the very first time this year.
Jan Helmich completed his MPhil in Industrial Systems, Manufacture and Management at the IfM in 2020, and went on to pursue a PhD in the Cyber-Human Lab under the supervision of Dr Thomas Bohné directly afterward - all of which whilst training as a professional athlete!
"Working with an athlete of Jan’s calibre is an absolute pleasure. His discipline to achieve a world class level in both his studies and sports is an inspiration for everyone working with him," says Thomas.
Jan will represent Team Germany in the PR3 Mixed Double Sculls Heats at the Paris Paralympic Games, together with doubles partner Hermine Krumbein. The duo has had an excellent season so far, with a gold medal in the PR3 Mix2x (PR3 mixed double sculls) at World Rowing Cup II, a bronze at World Rowing Cup III, and a silver in the 2024 European Rowing Championships.

For his doctoral research, Jan investigates the technological opportunities for human-machine collaboration in the future of work. But right now, his focus will be on competing this Friday 30 August from 9:50 am (BST), with races continuing through to Sunday. Tune in to Channel 4 for live coverage of the Paralympic Games throughout the weekend and show your support.
The IfM community is cheering you on, Jan!
