IfM 60th Anniversary Fund

Celebrating 60 Years of Manufacturing Education at Cambridge

To mark six decades of excellence in manufacturing teaching at the University of Cambridge, we are proud to launch the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) 60th Anniversary Fund, a tribute to our legacy and a commitment to shaping the future.

The journey began with the Advanced Course in Production Methods and Management (ACPMM) (set up by Mike Sharman), later evolving into the Advanced Course in Design Methods and Management (ACDMM). In 2004, under the leadership of Tom Ridgman, the programme was transformed into a full Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and renamed Industrial Systems, Manufacture and Management (ISMM).

Throughout its history, the IfM has been a pioneer in connecting academic rigour with industrial relevance. This milestone is an opportunity to celebrate our achievements in manufacturing research, education, and innovation - and to invest in what comes next.

The 60th Anniversary Fund will support strategic initiatives aligned with the Department of Engineering’s vision, with a focus on:

  • Enhancing Alumni Relations
  • Enhancing the student experience
  • Strengthening collaboration and engagement with industry
  • Investing in and supporting excellent students
  • Supporting new course development

Your support will help ensure the IfM continues to lead in sustainable manufacturing, driving progress toward a more resilient, inclusive, and environmentally responsible world.

Join us in commemorating 60 years of industrial impact, nearly 1900 graduates, and help us build the next chapter.
