Project Aims 

 

Through this project, UCI will consider and develop:

  • Primer on geography of innovation and evolution of place -based policies
  • Analytical framework of universities and place-based development
  • Current university place-based strategies
  • International approaches to accelerating place-based development.
  • Principles for the design and implementation of place-based KE funding.

Key Research Questions

  • How can a university’s research commercialisation and innovation activities realistically contribute to the development of places and industrial clusters?
  • How do the capabilities and resources of a place affect the potential of a university’s research and innovation efforts to deliver local impacts?
  • What is the balance between investing in initiatives specifically designed to impact the local economy and national / technologically driven initiatives that result in spillover benefits to the local area?
  • What types of university strategies are used to increase their impacts on their local economies given their particular circumstances and capabilities?
  • What can be done by governments and universities to accelerate the benefits of a university’s research and innovation activities on a particular place?
  • What principles should inform the design, measurement and evaluation, and governance and coordination of place-based KE funding in the short (i.e. in the absence of significant sub-national indicators) and long term?
