Improving metrics capturing university knowledge exchange for regional economic growth

Project Aims

Kicking off with a roundtable discussion in September 2024, this project aims to drive forward progress toward improved data and metrics on university knowledge exchange for regional growth. This project will identify areas where we may need to seek further expert insight and research, as well as develop new tangible proposals to improve data and metrics in this space.

Key Research Questions

  • What are the latest developments in policies and approaches aimed at driving regional economic growth and how do universities typically feature within them?
  • What do we know about the role and contribution of different types of universities to regional economic growth through their knowledge exchange activities, and how do the conditions of a place affect the ability of universities to deliver benefits to their regions?
  • What are the key needs for improved data and metrics on the potential and performance of universities’ KE activities in regional economic growth, for national funders of knowledge exchange, for local growth strategy development, and for universities/other stakeholders delivering regional growth-focused KE initiatives?
  • What data do we already collect in this space and where are the biggest opportunities for improving data and metrics in the short/medium/long term?
