Organizing for IP exploitation

Intellectual property (IP) may adopt many forms - patents, trademarks, goodwill, designs, copyright and know-how. But what all of these forms have in common is that they provide key IP assets potentially with substantial commercial and innovation potential. Knowing how to leverage these IP assets requires a balanced blend of IP awareness, commercial understanding and familiarity with IP portfolio management. Committed to supporting the UK industry, IfM’s Centre for Technology Management (CTM) and Avidity IP launched the Strategic Intellectual Property Forum (SIPF) to help companies understand how to manage and exploit their IP.

Speakers

Frank Tietze, CTM, Institute for Manufacturing

Frank pursues research at the intersection of management sciences and business (micro) economics and has a keen interest in entrepreneurship. He joined the Centre for Technology Management (CTM) as lecturer in technology and innovation management in 2014. Since more than 10 years, Frank’s research focuses on IP management covering various topics, such as technology transactions (acquisition, exploitation/ commercialisation), IP strategies, market intermediaries, licensing and patent informatics for strategic decision making. He is the academic editorial board member of Les Nouvelles, the official journal of the Licensing Executive Society (LES) and gained first hand IP experience when he co-founded a VC backed venture in 2008.

 

Adrian Howson, Avidity IP

Adrian Howsen is a chartered mechanical engineer who has developed products and processes for medical , pharmaceutical  and industrial clients for over twenty-five years.   This work has  mostly been completed whilst working for Cambridge-based consultancies, most notably Cambridge Consultants and PA Consulting Group. He has worked on a number of medical device development projects for large pharmaceutical companies  and is well known in GSK, MSD, AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Bayer. In 2010 he joined  CliftonCowley, a technology and Patent IP company where he started up a number of projects related to medical devices and in one application, a Liquid Crystal Display.

Two of these projects are close to exiting successfully with large manufacturers.  CliftonCowley then merged with Avidity in 2014. In Avidity he is CTO, leading the technical and product provision to complement our attorney services which aims to help our clients realise better products, sooner.He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and edits the IMechE Pharma Newsletter SIG.  His first degree was in Mechanical Engineering from Liverpool University and he has an MBA from City University Business School.

 

Stephan Wolke, Thyssenkrupp AG

Dr. Stephan Wolke studied physics, philosophy and macroeconomics at Bonn university and graduated in physics. He spent the first five years of his professional career at McKinsey & Company. After founding (and having sold) two own businesses Stephan was in several functions at Bayer AG as well as Danaher Corp. He joined ThyssenKrupp in 2011 and is on corporate level responsible for Intellectual Property & Services (TIS IPS) as a well as head of the management board of the newly founded ThyssenKrupp Intellectual Property GmbH. He is 47 and father of three sons.

 

Annie Brooking, Bactest

Annie joined BACTEST as CEO in 2011 in order to commercialise the company’s technology platform CYTOMAIA. In 2012 the company launched Speedy Breedy, a portable microbial respirometer aimed at detecting contamination in liquid and macerated solids to include food, water, beer, paint and oil.Annie has been a CEO for over 20 years in the UK and Iceland and has brought seventeen products to market to include computer hardware, software, imaging systems and medical devices and instrumentation. Annie is an experienced executive and non-executive Director, CEO and leader of academic, research, engineering and marketing teams.

Annie was recruited by Eric Schmidt (now Executive Chairman of Google) to Sun Microsystems in Silicon Valley in the mid 80’s where she worked as a software strategist, later working at Symbolics Corp. in Boston as Director of Marketing. Annie is an honorary research fellow at the Open University’s Knowledge Media Institute and Partner Emeritus at ET Capital, a Cambridge, UK based venture capital company.She has been an active participant and advisor in the EEC’s Framework Programmes. Annie is the author of several scientific publications and two books on intangible assets,  “Intellectual Capital” and “Corporate Memory”.

 

Ian Anderson, Bespak

Ian has over 26 years’ experience developing innovative new products in a diverse array of industries from aerospace and consumer products, through to medical devices. Ian joined Bespak in 2010 after a spell of 14 years in technology consultancy at The Technology Partnership (TTP), followed by Sagentia where he headed up the development team. Prior to consultancy he worked in the aeronautical (Thales), broadcast (Vitec) and laboratory (Thermo) industries.

Ian joined Bespak to create our Cambridge Innovation Centre and used his experience to diversify the business through the creation of the next generation of drug mixing and administration devices based on patient needs. Ian has a MEng in Engineering and an MSc in Innovative Design from Cranfield University.

 

Ian Harvey, BTG

Ian Harvey was CEO of BTG plc from 1985 until his retirement in late 2004.  During that time he oversaw the privatisation of BTG in 1992, its public flotation in 1995, a demerger of part of its business and three Rights Issues totalling £250 million to raise business expansion capital from its shareholders. BTG was the world-leading technology commercialisation company which had been patenting and licensing globally since the early 1950’s. He was Chairman of the Intellectual Property Institute from 1999-2011.

Following a degree in Mechanical Sciences from Cambridge University, his early career was as an engineer with Vickers and Laporte Industries in the civil, aerospace and chemical industries. After an MBA from Harvard Business School, he was with the World Bank in a variety of roles in South Asia and French-speaking West Africa.

He is currently: Chairman, IP Center Advisory Board, Tsinghua University x-lab, Beijing; Adjunct Professor, Imperial College Business School, London and member of its IP Centre Advisory Board; and, advisor to NTEM, Tianjin, China. He is a member of the Industry Advisory Board, Center for IP Studies (CIP) Chalmers University of Technology and Göteborg University, Sweden as well as the Norwegian Intellectual Property Institute, Trondheim.

Other appointments have included: Chairman of the UK government’s Intellectual Property Advisory Committee (2001-2005); and, the UK Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Science & Technology (1989-93. He has been a student for many years of the history and trends of global invention and technology development and the related role of IP. He has written many articles and book chapters and lectures widely on global intellectual property and technology issues, particularly as they relate to business. He is currently involved with the development of intellectual property in China and pressing for the teaching of intellectual property as part of strategy in business school programmes worldwide.

 

Paul Chapman, Avidity IP

Paul has almost 30 years experience of working in Intellectual property in the Life Sciences field. He began his career working in private practice in the 1980s, during the early days of the Biotech industry. He then spent several years in house in a multinational pharmaceutical company, which gave him a useful perspective on the commercial importance of IP, both from the point of view of protecting new products and also clearing a path for a company’s commercial activities. He then returned to private practice and spent over 20 years at a major London firm, 17 of them as a partner.

Paul has worked for individual clients, for start up companies and SMEs, for Universities and for larger corporate clients. His experience ranges across all areas of IP including, initial drafting and prosecution of patents, developing and managing patent portfolios, developing IP strategies, IP due diligence and IP transactional work, including stock exchange listings. As well as these he also has a wealth of experience in EPO Opposition and Appeal proceedings.
