But what all of these forms have in common is that they provide key IP assets potentially with substantial commercial and innovation potential. Knowing how to leverage these IP assets requires a balanced blend of IP awareness, commercial understanding and familiarity with IP portfolio management.

Committed to supporting UK industry, IfM’s Centre for Technology Management (CTM) and Avidity IP launched the Strategic Intellectual Property Forum (SIPF) to help companies understand how to manage and exploit their IP.

Anthony Finbow - Chairman and CEO, Eagle Genomics

As Executive Chairman and CEO, Anthony has built and exited a number of intellectual property rich B2B software companies. In particular, he was responsible for the turnaround, strategic repositioning and sale of private venture backed communications software company, Psytechnics to US Nasdaq listed NetScout. Similarly, as Managing Director of MetaSolv, he was responsible for doubling the size of the European business, prior to that company being acquired by Oracle. In addition to his extensive operational experience, Anthony has occupied every seat at the board table: Chairman, CEO, CFO, NXD and Investor Director (for both public and private companies) and is uniquely qualified in working with CEO’s and their management teams to meet the most significant challenges that they will encounter on their journey

 

Patricia Christias - Head of Legal, Microsoft UK

Patricia started her career in private practice as an IP litigator. She then transitioned to become a commercial lawyer and is currently Head of Legal for Microsoft in the UK, leading a team of lawyers who support the full range of Microsoft businesses in the UK on a wide range of commercial and contentious issues.
Microsoft Azure is Microsoft's public cloud computing platform. It provides a range of cloud services, including those for compute, analytics, storage and networking. Users can pick and choose from these services to develop and scale new applications, or run existing applications, in the public cloud.

 

Ross Rounsevell PhD - Business Development Manager, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute

Ross has a BSc in biochemistry from the University of Bath and in 2005 was awarded a PhD in biophysics from the University of Cambridge. After a year of postdoctoral research in Cambridge, Ross changed his focus from pulling apart single proteins to building biological systems during a five-year postdoctoral position at the University of California at Berkeley. In 2011, Ross became Technology Transfer Manager, and later Business Development Manager, at the Wellcome Sanger Institute - a world-leading research Institute focused on genomics. His current role involves working with researchers facilitating the translation of their discoveries into novel healthcare products and services, with a focus on those technologies derived from the significant informatics resources of the Institute.

 

Gareth Jones - VP Intellectual Property, BenevolentAI

Gareth is VP Intellectual Property at BenevolentAI, the largest private AI company in Europe and one of the top five largest private AI companies in the world. BenevolentAI is applying AI technology to enhance and accelerate scientific innovation, and has already achieved major breakthroughs in human health and entered into license agreements with some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. Gareth was previously Head of IP for SwiftKey, where he built and scaled IP operations in preparation for one of the largest UK tech exits in 2015/16. He has a background in technical leadership and software development, and experience with IBM, Vodafone, and Microsoft.

 

Martin Callinan - Founder, Source Code Control Ltd

Martin has over 20 years experience providing organisations with strategies to manage business risks associated with open source software such as IP compliance, security vulnerability management and procurement.
He is actively involved in the open source software industry to help create best practices and industry standards for the adoption and management of open source based software through organisations such as TechUK and OpenUK Industry Association for Software Asset Management.

 

Dr Frank Tietze, Centre for Technology Management, IfM

Frank pursues research at the intersection of management sciences and business (micro) economics and has a keen interest in entrepreneurship. He joined the Centre for Technology Management (CTM) as lecturer in technology and innovation management in 2014. Since more than 10 years, Frank’s research focuses on IP management covering various topics, such as technology transactions (acquisition, exploitation/ commercialisation), IP strategies, market intermediaries, licensing and patent informatics for strategic decision making. He is the academic editorial board member of Les Nouvelles, the official journal of the Licensing Executive Society (LES) and gained first hand IP experience when he co-founded a VC backed venture in 2008.
