Yin is a PhD candidate in the Fluids in Advanced Manufacturing research group under the supervision of Dr. Ronan Daly. She is based on materials science and is currently working on soft matter mechanics. Her study focuses on the fundamental physics of poroviscoelastic properties of hydrogels from nano-scale to micro-scale. Specifically this will be used to tackle one of the biggest challenges in tissue engineering, controlling the mechanical properties and fluid transport independently to mimic natural behaviours. Yin is using multi-scale indentation techniques, rheometers and molecular dynamic simulations to understand the basic science of material interactions. Yin’s work can be extended to research on structural and mechanical behaviour in both synthetic and biological systems. Through understanding the solid-fluid coupling physics of hydrogels, Yin aims to provide design strategies for making hydrogels with tunable properties.
