Steve Hope
I am a Chartered Engineer(IET) who first worked aa a sponsored at the Boots Co PLC during and following my BEng (1st Class Honours) from Bradford University in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Following a part-time MBA (Loughborough University) I joined Toyota Mptor Manufacturing UK during the construction phase of the first two purpose-built manufacturing facilities in Europe in 1991 as the Manager of Facilities and Environment
After establishing this Department with my team, I went on to manage other areas of the business including the construction of a second assembly shop, a casting facility and supporting the construction of a new facility in France. This was supplemented by experiences in Assembly Shop Engineering and Health and Safety.
In 2006, Steve was assigned to Toyota Motor Europe to Plant Engineering supporting an ultimate total of 9 manufacturing facilities. At this time I was first able to collaborate with with IfM via CIS, benefitting from the excellent opportunities to learn and also to commence making some modest contributions from my experiences, both which I have enjoyed doing up to this time and hoe to continue doing over the next months and years.
After a Toyota career continually considering Environmental performance and improvement in a factory setting, in 2012 I was assigned to a GM role in Environmental Affairs and Corporate Citizenship taking responsibility for the complete Environmental scope of the vehicle’s lifecycle for the European Region alongside Social Responsibility
In recent years this organisation has increased and strengthened it’s scope to include social and ESG topics where I still support the organisation with my experience and learning from IfM
I am now moving towards early retirement from Industry and have been given this great opportunity to give back some of my experience from an industry perspective to IfM Cambridge as a Visiting Fellow
My interests within Industrial Sustainability are –
- The promotion of energy and low CO2 activity across all sectors on a progression to true Net Zero
- The promotion and development of life cycle resource efficiency as a contribution towards the Circular Economy
- The engagement of all members (employees) across all occupational classifications to persue Net Zero & Circular Economy goals within manufacturing industry in the context of Sustainable Development (full ESG scope)
- The development and incorporation of ESG policy and philosophy within modern business models that are fit for the 21st Century
Steve is married and enjoying life in Europe and UK (eg. DIY, playing music, walking / caravanning / gardening / wildlife and conservation) and is located in Brussels - but able to visit Cambridge on a frequent basis!
