Jonathan is a management engineer and associate professor of Strategic Management and Research Methods at the Department of Management Science, Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. As a Visiting Academic Fellow at the IfM, he is writing a book and an article on roadmapping for business and management school audiences, in co-authorship with Dr Rob Phaal. Jonathan is a long-standing research partner of Dr Maicon Oliveira, who, together with colleagues at the IfM, leads global research on Digital Roadmapping. He was also the PhD supervisor of André Gomes, a student who recently visited IfM while developing his thesis on enhancing roadmapping through AI techniques and topic modelling.
In addition to his long-standing work with roadmapping, Jonathan also has two further areas of expertise: Problem Structuring Methods (PSMs) and formal methods of qualitative analysis. With regard to the former, he has extensive experience in applying methods such as Strategic Choice Approach (SCA), Strategic Options and Development Analysis (SODA/Journey Making), Robustness Analysis, Confrontation/Dilemma Analysis, and General Morphological Analysis (GMA) to tackle real-world problems. As for formal qualitative methods, he has wide experience with Event Structure Analysis (ESA), Process Tracing, Causal Cognitive Mapping, Repertory Grid Technique (RGT), Policy Capturing, Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), and Coincidence Analysis (CNA).
In relation to CNA in particular, Jonathan is part of the team that has been leading methodological developments of this innovative approach. As such, he has delivered lectures and courses worldwide on how to use Boolean and Fuzzy logic to analyse data for causal inference, using electrical circuits as an underlying analogy. His most recent talks on the subject include those at the University of St Gallen, the University of Bergen, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), and the Prague University of Economics and Business (VSE).
