Dr German Terrazas Angulo
German is a computer scientist who has joined DIAL in February 2019. His current research interests lie at the interface of computer science and manufacturing engineering. In particular, he focuses on intelligence embedded low-cost devices, machine tools condition monitoring, internet of things, data analytics, artificial intelligence, complex systems, unconventional computing as well as cloud and edge architectures. German considers that the integration of these elements is crucial to deliver novel and cost-effective decision support solutions to innovate current manufacturing production environments.
German started his researcher career as an undergraduate student at Laboratorio de Investigacion y Formacion en Informatica de Avanzada (LIFIA), UNLP, Argentina, combining software engineering, formal methods and advanced computing technologies for developing large-scale software applications, complex systems and combinatorial optimisation algorithms. During this stage, German was a visiting researcher at the Institute of Informatics, FURGS, Brazil, where his work focused on novel methodologies and innovations applied to object-oriented web applications. Towards the end of his undergraduate studies, German worked in the private sector including ATX Technologies Ltd., Portugal, where he focused on large-scale software applications for restructuring technological foundations of legacy banking processes. While in this position, he also collaborated with the University of Lisbon, King’s College London and the University of Leicester exploring the applications and impact of advanced software engineering methods in the financial sector.
In 2004, German was granted with the Overseas Research Students Award, one of the most selective and prestigious awards, to undertake his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Nottingham. For this purpose, he joined the Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning group to conduct investigations on the automated evolutionary design optimisation of discrete and continuous computational models for self-assembly and self-organising systems. In 2007, German was awarded the Best Conference Paper Award and the Best Student Paper Award in the IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation, one of the most prestigious international conferences on evolutionary computation. German’s expertise in multidisciplinary research projects started in the Interdisciplinary Computation and Complex Systems research group of the University of Nottingham. He was a lead postdoc for the EPSRC Evolutionary Optimsation of Self-Assembling Nano-Designs (ExIStENcE) project where, together with researchers from the School of Chemistry and the School of Physics and Astronomy, aimed at the automated design of molecular self-assembly.
In 2013, German joined the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing, University of Nottingham, to focus on informatics for simulation, control and automation. He was part of the EPSRC Cloud Manufacturing project and leader for the EU H2020 MC-Suite project aimed at computer aided manufacturing for facilitating digital technologies in production environments targeting ICT enabled manufacturing process simulation and optimisation. During this stage, German envisioned an online tool condition monitoring system that combines real-time physical measurements with deep learning to report the wear of metal cutting tools during dry milling. In addition to this, German has also designed and realised a cloud-based data analytics framework to accommodate the integration of data services while exploiting the power of elastic computing for distributed analytics. In 2019, his achievements were identified as a central piece of research with potential commercialisation and, as a result, awarded with over £50,000 EPSRC funding for further product development.
Alongside his research duties, German has continuously demonstrated his dedication and passion to teach by serving as tutor and lab assistant for a number of master and undergraduate computer science modules in the UK and abroad. In addition, he has been part of several scientific committees for overseeing research grant proposals and PhD theses. German has organised several conferences and workshops across Europe, refereed high impact academic journals, edited academic books and contributed with his vision to both academic and science fiction books. As project executive and technical manager, he has successfully recruited teams of researchers, tailored individual research plans, overseen the global direction of research projects and built networks of both industrial and academic partners.
