Gary Punter

Visiting Fellow

Gary is both a visiting Fellow (Centre for Industrial Sustainability) and a consultant for IfM Engage. As a Fellow he guides research into future factory concepts and as a consultant he delivers sustainability improvement for major companies.

Notably, Gary is the founder of the Cambridge Sustainability Improvement Methodology (CSIM), also known as Sustain8. This methodology provides a foundation for sustainable transformation by engaging front-line factory workers in improvement. This has been successfully employed across many sectors and is proven to deliver 15-30% improvements in energy, waste, materials, water and rework efficiencies.

In his role as Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge, Gary promotes research in new Circular Economy concepts ( 'No Waste' factories ) and local bio-manufacturing techniques relevant for developing countries (particularly Africa).

Prior to joining Cambridge, Gary had 34 years of technology leadership in agri-manufacturing, predominantly with AB Sugar (an Associated British Foods FTSE 100 company). AB Sugar are the world’s second-largest sugar company with factories in Europe, China & Africa.  Reporting directly to the main Board, he has worked globally in 31 factories to introduce technology innovation; to benchmark factory performance; and to lead a Community of Practice in sharing best practice across 1000 professionals in 11 countries. Gary has particular expertise in developing diversified 'no waste' bio refineries producing food, feed, alcohol, bioenergy & biochemicals from agricultural crops. He lectures to final year Cambridge students on the Wissington case study, a world class bio refinery, for which he was one of the main architects.

Gary is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and has been President of the European Society for Sugar Technologists.
