
Gülfem is a visiting PhD student at the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), part of the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, from June to December 2025. Her research visit is supported by the Foundation for Economic Education, which selected her doctoral project as a flagship initiative.
She is a third-year PhD student and junior researcher at LUT University in Finland. Her research focuses on the Internet of Things (IoT) within the dynamic standardization and patent licensing environment, under the supervision of Prof. Ville Ojanen, Dr. (Tech) Matti Karvonen, and Dr. (Econ) Jussi Heikkilä.
During her research visit, she is working under the supervision of Prof. Frank Tietze to explore the role of patent attorneys and law firms in standard-essential patent (SEP) licensing negotiations. Her work aims to shed light on how legal professionals support IoT companies in navigating the complexities of SEP licensing.
Gülfem holds a BSc. in Industrial Engineering from Izmir University of Economics (Turkey) and an MSc. (Tech) in Industrial Engineering and Management from LUT University (Finland).
