Deepesh works as a Research Associate, Lead Researcher in Cloud Manufacturing and Supply Chain Observatory Practice at the Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO), a cutting-edge initiative by the Industrial Resilience Research Group at Cambridge University's Institute for Manufacturing (IfM). By integrating Open Data, advanced analytics, AI, and remote sensing, this initiative provides unprecedented visibility into end-to-end supply chains, informing policy and industry leaders to take decisive, data-driven action. Deepesh joined the IfM as a Visiting Scholar in October 2023. His primary research focuses on critical mineral industry and supply chain digitalisation using cloud technologies, particularly working closely with Google Cloud as a technical partner.
His previous research work examined the aerospace composite manufacturing industry's readiness for a Cloud Manufacturing-as-a-Service transformation. He has also worked at the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Robotics and Intelligent Manufacturing Equipment Technology, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Composite Research Group, and the Advanced Energy Environmental Materials & Technologies Research Group at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), through the Doctoral Training Partnership Program at Nottingham University. Prior to his PhD, Deepesh was a university lecturer in Materials Science and Automotive Engineering in Sri Lanka.
An active contributor to academia, Deepesh has spoken at numerous international conferences, intergovernmental meetings, workshops and has published in leading journals such as the Journal of Manufacturing Systems (IF 12.1). His work has also appeared at IEEE, POMS and other international conferences in countries including the UK, USA, Australia, India, China, and France. Furthermore, he has co-authored a chapter in Advances of Digital Manufacturing Systems, published by Springer Nature. Deepesh has been recognised for his academic achievements with multiple international scholarships and awards in research competitions, including Global Runner-up in the U21/PwC Innovation Challenge (2019/20) and Runner-up in the 3MT Competition (2020).
Deepesh has also shared his expertise on prestigious national and international platforms, including as an invited panelist on critical minerals at the Royal Society in London and the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Critical Minerals at the Houses of Parliament. He is also a TEDx speaker.
