Visiting Industrial Fellow
Andy is a professionally qualified operations manager and engineer with extensive experience in high value manufacturing. He has for the past five years enjoyed the challenge of managing the £11.7m EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Through-life Engineering Services (TES). He led an initiative to develop a National Strategy in TES with senior leaders from industry and government. Following the end of the initial Centre funding Andy has left Cranfield and started his own consultancy business, Ostoya Associates Limited, which he uses to disseminate the outputs of the past five years of the Centre’s research.
Andy’s interests lie in better understanding the engineering service and support operations and how they might be integrated with manufacturing. He is currently co-editing a book for Springer entitled “Advances in Through-life Engineering Services”. He is also a visiting fellow of Cranfield University where he teaches on Masters and Executive Education Programmes.
Andy began his engineering career as a specialist in noise and vibration supporting both the new build and in-service nuclear submarine fleets at Barrow-in-Furness. After studying for a Diploma in Industrial Management, Andy took on the responsibility of night-shift manager for the Engineering Works in the shipyard. After a year he went to Cranfield University to undertake a Fellowship in Manufacturing Management. He returned to the yard and held a number of management posts in manufacturing operations and production control.
Andy moved to GEC-Alstom in Preston where he initially took on responsibility for the machine shop. Here he managed the manufacture of new and the repair of old traction motors for trains. Eventually he took over the press shop and commutator assembly shops and led successful initiatives in obtaining the ISO9001. Seeking new challenges Andy worked for London Underground on traction motor reliability for six months but returned north to take up a post as Teaching Fellow at the Department of Engineering at Lancaster University.
With his broad background in heavy engineering and manufacturing Andy was ideally placed to help develop Lancaster’s manufacturing syllabus. He also worked in collaboration with Durham and Cambridge Universities on a one year experiential post graduate programme for newly graduated engineers. Called the Advanced Course in Design, Manufacture and Management (ACDMM) it involved Andy in setting up short industrial placements for the graduates in companies both big and small all over the UK. He led the first tour on European industry to venture to the old Eastern Block visiting companies in what were East Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. He still maintains key links with colleagues in Poland.
Andy moved to Cambridge University and its Institute for Manufacturing where over a thirteen year spell he continued to support ACDMM but also got involved in research. He joined the Distributed Information and Automation Laboratory (DIAL) where he helped manage a number of major research programmes, some with UK funding, some funded by the EU and some funded directly by industry. Here he proposed, won and led a £2.6m programme to develop useful tools for industry from the outputs of research into service and support engineering across a consortium of six Universities. In 2011 Andy moved to Cranfield to manage the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Through-life Engineering Services. He also joined the ADS (Aerospace, Defence and Security trade association) special interest group in Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul and Logistics.
