Current role

Nick is a Senior Industrial Fellow at IfM Education and Consultancy Services (IfM ECS) with an exceptional track record in innovation and value-creation. His current role with IfM ECS involves leading projects with partner companies in Australia aimed at putting IfM research output into practice. Nick is applying the IfM’s toolset to enable companies to develop their strategies and capabilities and make tactical and operational changes to deliver sustainable, profitable growth.

 

A highly regarded R&D Innovation Strategy consultant, Nick works with multinational corporations and research institutions with platforms covering product innovation, processing technology, health and nutrition, food safety, digital farming, big data and sustainability.

 

Nick is also an adjunct lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where he is teaching in the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation, which is a trans-disciplinary degree teaching innovation skills to future entrepreneurs and innovators. An active influencer of the innovation ecosystem in Australia, Nick was a founder member of Food Innovation Australia and participates in national and global conferences, panels, reviews and workshops.

 

Background

An experienced R&D executive, Nick’s game-changing innovation and value creation skills have driven sales and profit growth in top global FMCG companies, including both Pepsico and Mars where he held senior R&D Director roles. Nick has a strong track record of leading, developing and inspiring world-class R&D capability to deliver Innovation, quality and productivity breakthroughs spanning product, process, nutrition, packaging, environment and business model design. As a result, he was responsible for the creation and development of many successful food products around the world including well-loved global brands: Grainwaves/Sunbites, Smiths/Lays, Red Rock Deli/Copper Kettle, Pepsi, Gatorade, Masterfoods, Kantong, Dolmio, Uncle Ben’s and Seeds of Change.

 

Nick developed R&D capability, innovation capability and pipeline and productivity portfolio in three businesses in Europe and Australia. He successfully navigated the inevitable business tension between short and long-term results, recouping R&D costs by productivity savings and through innovative use of existing assets. This includes creating technical breakthroughs that changed the game in the field of food processing, recipe formulation and packaging functionality, challenging the rules in total supply pipeline and validating processes that improve quality and reduce costs, enabling outstanding market success across Food, Pet Food and Snack Food categories.

 

Nick is also an innovation leader in environmental and nutritional sustainability through technical solutions that enabled the cost effective delivery of the business vision. He developed technical solutions for saturated fat and salt reduction delivered on PepsiCo’s Performance with Purpose strategy of salt, saturated fat and calorie reduction three years ahead of Global commitment, winning the PepsiCo Chairman’s Award in 2014.

 

Nick holds a Masters degree in manufacturing engineering from the University of Cambridge.
