Background

Maurizio joined DIAL and the Auto-ID Lab as a Research Associate in January 2009, after having completed a PhD in Manufacturing Technology and Systems at Politecnico di Milano (Italy). His PhD Thesis presented a novel methodology to optimally adapt the physical layout and composition (numbers and types of machines) of a manufacturing system, as the technical specifications for the products to be manufactured change over time.

Since joining, Maurizio has continued working on re-configurability of industrial systems and processes. Currently, he is developing a quantitative tool set to help airport managers in the long-term reconfiguration of their airports' infrastructure, capabilities and capacity. At the same time, he has been investigating on the operational benefits that Auto-ID technologies such as RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) or RTLS (Real Time Location Systems) can bring to diverse airport processes, ranging from the management of multiple aircraft turnarounds to the delivery of services to passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs). Finally, Maurizio has been deeply involved in DIAL research on asset management and maintenance decision making, with a focus on developing quantitative models that support condition-based maintenance and inspection decisions in sectors such as manufacturing, utilities and transport.
