Andy ShawAcademic Interests
ManagementAndy is the business manager for the Distributed Information & Automation Laboratory and the Auto-ID Labs at Cambridge. He is responsible for the development of research, consultancy and industrial collaboration business in the group. He and Alan Thorne instigated the Aerospace ID technologies programme, a research initiative to attack problems in the use of identification technologies (including RFID) in the aerospace sector world wide. BackgroundAndy graduated from Lancaster University and began his industrial career with VSEL, the UK's nuclear submarine and surface warship builder. After an early specialized career in noise and vibration engineering he moved into manufacturing and ran the engineering works night shift for a year. Following an EITB Fellowship in Manufacturing Management at Cranfield, he took up a post responsible for the supply of manufactured parts to a major warship programme. He then moved to GEC-Alsthom where he was responsible for the manufacture of electric train motors for various contracts including the Manchester Trams, Eurostar and the Networker rolling stock. He moved to London Underground acting as an independent consultant on the reliability and maintenance of the older rolling stock. It was from here that Andy entered higher education joining Lancaster University as a Teaching Fellow. Andy has recently been awarded the degree of MPhil by the Engineering Department at Lancaster for his work on polymer bonding. Professional AppointmentsAndy is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Physicist, a Chartered Scientist and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He is currently a member of the Professional Standards Committee of the Institute of Physics, the Registration Standards Committee of ECUK and the National Advisory Committee on Aerospace Manufacturing.
