Supporting Social and Industrial Development in Developing Economies

Many developing countries seek to grow the industrial sector of their economies to provide dignified employment for an expanding population and to generate economic growth. IfM has a team of senior practitioners and educationalists whose role is to help emerging economies to develop: strategies and policies to build competitive industries; education programmes to enhance leadership and capabilities; and business support programmes to support innovation, employment and growth

Industrial Strategy and Policy

The IfM works with governments to develop policies to support innovation and strong industrial growth. Issues addressed include:

  • Industrial Strategy for the development of manufacturing and related service industries
  • national industry sector and technology strategies and roadmaps
  • science, technology and innovation policies
  • education programmes for industry
  • policies and programmes for business support

Education Programmes

The IfM has many years experience of educating business and technical leaders. Working with national host education institutions we develop and transfer postgraduate and industry education programmes, designed to deliver the range of knowledge, skills and capabilities needed to support industrial development.

Business Support

The IfM can help governments to support the growth of manufacturing SMEs by:

  • developing strategies for business support programmes
  • providing education, tools and mentoring to support the development of manufacturing business support agencies

Case study

The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), founded in 2004, aims to meet the needs of Trinidad and Tobago for highly trained and qualified technical manpower .

The IfM has successfully developed a postgraduate (MSc) course in Industrial Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Management for UTT.

The MSc is a twelve-month full-time postgraduate programme designed to provide graduates with the technical skills, personal development and industrial experience needed to become immediately effective in industry, leading to accelerated promotion, and enabling them to contribute to the economic development of Trinidad & Tobago and the region.
