Briefing notes for session moderators

Process of each session

  1. 5-min introduction by the moderator
  2. two or three 5-min presentations
  3. in-depth group discussion
  4. a brief summary of key points from the session by the moderator

In addition to the domain session, the white paper will also include ideas and thoughts from the industrial session, approach session, and closing session.

Your role as a moderator

In preparation for the meeting and indeed the white paper, you will be in charge of one of the sessions (see Programme Planning Matrix for more information). Based on the presentations and discussions during your session, you are expected to contribute 3-5 pages towards the white paper. To this end, we ask you to:

  1. start with a short introduction to the session with the questions and objectives (max 5 mins)
  2. ensure presentations are completed in time (2-3 presentations; each max 5 mins)
  3. facilitate the group discussion with an aim to seek a consensus view and avoid excessive disputation, though alternative views should be recorded.
Please be vigilant of over-biased perspectives that claim the answer is simply "primarily a single existing discipline", "a new all inclusive discipline directly combining the others", or "early integration of disciplines around a single perspective"
  4. finish with a summary of key points from the session (allowing 5-10 mins)
  5. ensure the session is completed in time

The co-chairs will be responsible for the overall process of the meeting, and will be able to assist moderators.

Materials for preparation

Your preparation will be supported by the following materials:

  1. your own understanding of the questions in your session (which you can start now)
  2. a collection of answers to the questionnaire completed by contributors (available by 4th July)
  3. a collection of position papers in your session (available by 4th July)
  4. two or three presentations in your session (available by 11th July)
