Briefing notes for academic participants
Process of each session
- 5-min introduction by the moderator
- two or three 5-min presentations
- in-depth group discussion
- a brief summary of key points from the session by the moderator
As can be seen above, we strive to spend most of our time on discussions. The goal is to articulate possible answers to the questions and establish the common ground for further development.
Your contribution as an academic participant
In addition to your participation in the discussions, we would be most grateful if you could prepare:
- Presentation. You have been allocated to one of the sessions (see 'Two Day Symposium Structure' and 'Programme Planning Matrix'). Please use two slides to present what you think should be included in the white paper in your session (see 'Sample Presentation'). To allow enough time for discussion, the presentation should not exceed 5 minutes.
- Questionnaire. Besides your direct contribution to the allocated session, we are keen to collect your views on other groups of questions. It would be helpful if you could spare 30-45 minutes to complete the 'Symposium Questionnaire'. Please note that the questionnaire is not designed to set any boundaries, but we hope by answering the questionnaire, you may find it useful in stimulating your own thoughts.
- Position Paper. You are encouraged to submit a position paper in which you can elaborate your ideas so that other participants could read it before and after the meeting. The position paper can be your previous work or an essay purposely developed for the symposium. In the case of your previous work, please use maximum 250 words to explain why it is important to SSME development (see 'Sample Position Statement'), along with an attached PDF of the original paper if possible (see 'Sample Previous Work'). If you would like to submit an essay, please note that papers should be no longer than four double-column pages (see 'Format Requirements' and 'Sample Position Paper').
Submission deadline
Please send your presentation, completed questionnaire, and position paper to Guangjie Ren (gr276@cam.ac.uk) by Wednesday 4th July 2007. Once received, all submissions will be available shortly on a password-protected website for pre-meeting preparation.
