Grand Challenge in Service

Roundtable and Town Hall meeting on Service research

Thursday 23 September

Registration at 09.00, 09.30 Start, 17.00 Close

Hosted by Professor Irene Ng, Service researchers discuss key interdisciplinary themes across service research.

Service research is moving towards an integrated trans-disciplinary agenda to better understand how people, processes, and assets interact within complex service systems for the co-creation of value with customers. Yet, how do we organize the current research environment for better trans-disciplinary research that is relevant and impactful? Furthermore, the interplay between processes and outcomes within a service system which are non-linear and multi-directional in nature suggests that the instrument of analysis may not yet be scientifically reproducible in any meaningful manner by conventional methods. Indeed, techniques traditionally used could be, as Miller and Page (2007) put it, "understand running water by catching it in a bucket". Finally, even as we are able to gain understanding of service through research, how should intangible research be transferred to practice?

This one-day event will bring together academics, consultants and industry practitioners to ensure that service research continues to grow and impact upon practice and future research. It will be a valuable opportunity to discuss key aspects of service research and practice from a broad scientific perspective, going straight to the heart of the service research and practice community’s future.

During the event, service scholars from all over the globe will be presenting key issues in knowledge production and knowledge transfer in service from their disciplinary perspectives. There will then be an interactive discussion with all participants after each presentation and in the afternoon during the town hall meeting. Participants are encouraged to discuss key issues with all speakers.

At this event, we also hope to initiate the first ever global alliance between service researchers, bringing research individuals and centres around the world into a federated alliance to increase the dissemination and impact of our research, as well as develop an agenda for global collaborations. As individual researchers in our home countries, we may have an impact locally and nationally but coming together, we can achieve a global impact and we hope you will join us in the first meeting to bring this vision to reality.

Alongside the roundtable and town hall meeting, we also invite you to submit a poster of your research for display during the grand challenge week. Posters will be selected based on the criteria of being innovative and transdisciplinary. Poster presenters will be given the opportunity to talk about their research during the lunch break of the event and after the town hall meeting.
