Visual approaches for strategy and innovation managementOne-day seminar - Tuesday 22nd May 2012The ability to communicate clearly is a critical skill in business. However, in today’s field of strategy and innovation management there is a bewildering range of graphical forms, from simple tables, charts, and graphs through to matrices, maps and diagrams. Thus, it is the appropriate use of visual materials (e.g. roadmaps, portfolios, scenarios) that can provide clarity and conciseness, and enhance the overall message, narrative thread and key points. This seminar will outline the fundamental principles of designing visuals and provide practical guidance on how to apply them in the context of strategic technology management. The topics covered will include:
Who should attendManagers, engineers and consultants – particularly those who present at Board level or engage with the public. It will be of specific interest to those that prepare reports and presentations – especially those tired of the visual content of typical PowerPoint slide decks.Programme
Course leadersDr Clive Kerr is a Research Associate at the Centre for Technology Management since 2005. His current research interests are visual strategy, roadmapping, technology intelligence, technology insertion and through-life capability management. Prior to joining Cambridge, Clive was a Research Officer in Engineering Design at Cranfield University. He is a Chartered Engineer with professional memberships of the IMechE, IET, RAeS and the AIAA. Dr Robert Phaal is a Principal Research Associate at the Centre for Technology Management. He conducts research in the field of strategic technology management. Areas of interest include roadmapping, the emergence of technology-based industry, technology evaluation, visual strategy and the development of practical management tools. He has a mechanical engineering background with industrial experience in technical consulting, contract research and software development at TWI, a leading UK research and technology organization. |
