Manufacturing mobility

Setting up manufacturing operations abroad

  • assess how well your product will transfer
  • minimise problems at the host plant
  • plan and implement the move

Afternoon workshop, Tuesday 2 November 2010, IfM, Cambridge

Companies may choose to establish manufacturing operations in another country for a variety of reasons:

  • gain access to, or credibility in, a market
  • exploit lower manufacturing costs
  • obtain locally available resources such as materials or skills
  • compete with global competitors

Whatever the motivation, the transfer will involve a high commitment of time and resources. The consequences of the transfer can be far reaching and will have a significant impact on profit for years to come. Most managers face these strategic projects infrequently and their task is complicated by inconsistent and unreliable sources of data. Consequently, many companies fail to gain the benefits they expect from relocating their manufacturing operations.

Some companies choose to have their products made abroad by third parties. However, it is still vitally important to consider mobility issues when making such decisions.

The workshop

The workshop will be based around proven, structured approaches developed by the Centre for International Manufacturing and published in the form of two workbooks: Manufacturing Mobility and Fitness for Transfer. Delegates will receive copies of both books (included in the price) worth £49.50 each..

Who should attend?

Directors and senior manufacturing, supply chain or operations managers who are:

  • responsible for setting-up or relocating manufacturing operations abroad
  • planning to use third party manufacturing abroad

The presenter

The workshop will be facilitated by Dr Don Fleet from the IfM's Centre for International Manufacturing. Don had a long international manufacturing career with Unilever before joining the Institute for Manufacturing. He has extensive experience of the management, design and optimisation of international manufacturing networks.
