19th EPSRC Research Methodology Workshop

29 - 30 March 2012, Institute for Manufacturing, Cambridge

This event is specifically aimed at doctoral researchers. It seeks to equip participants with an appreciation of research design, methods and how to overcome potential challenges on their programmes.

The event typically features:

  • an introduction to research methods and research framework/ map development,
  • project feasibility factors, such as time management approaches to working with industry, and an introduction to case methods and action research
  • small interactive discussion group sessions
  • networking opportunities with other attendees

The RMW is appropriate for researchers with interests in technology, management or policy related disciplines.

We expect to attract as wide a group as possible covering a range of research topics, industry sectors and research approaches. We are particularly keen to see a good representation from students working on research council funded or industry/government sponsored programs.

If you are interested in attending, please complete the web application form. There will be a £95 plus VAT charge for workshop attendance if you are accepted. Acceptance is based on the quality of your application as places are limited. 13 February is the closing date for application.

The programme is divided into two streams: Stream 1 is designed for those early in their research career; stream 2 will target students approaching write-up stage (2nd and 3rd year PhD students). Some of the benefits by attending this workshop are described below.

For 1st year PhD Students (stream 1)

  • Get an introduction to research methods
  • Learn how to design your research
  • Discuss your research approach with other PhD students
  • Establish a network with PhD students from your field

For senior PhD students (stream 2)

  • Learn how to tackle challenges of your research
  • Present your chosen methods and preliminary results
  • Get feedback from experts and other PhD students
  • Hear about other PhD students' "lessons learned"

All delegates will be requested to deliver a short presentation of their research projects. Upon successful completion of the workshop, participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
