Research Degrees in Manufacturing

Typical Cases

The IfM uses a variety of research methods such as surveys and industry networks but by far the most common is case studies. Case studies involve research students spending anywhere from two weeks to two years working with a company. Students normally have partial or full responsibility for collaborating with companies, project management, organising and running workshops, interviewing, and presenting findings. Some recent cases examples from four different students include:

  • Rolls-Royce - The development of a manufacturing strategy for a business unit. This created an extensive change program that was presented to 1000 employees.
  • Philips - A study of the technology transfer of a telecoms factory from the UK to India. A model of best practice was developed for further transfers.
  • Soundcraft - A review of recent new product introductions at a high technology music business resulted in actions to improve future new products.
  • Aerospace - A review of the competitive strategy of a recent management buy out.
  • Composites - Lucas Aerospace. This led to reorganising and refocusing the business.
