Paul TaskerPaul Tasker works with IfM Education and Consultancy Services to support the industrial application of research with a special interest in the design, delivery and performance of complex service solutions - Service and Support Engineering. Paul has a background in systems’ design and equipment support, and until recently was the industrial programme director for Service and Support Engineering research at IfM. Paul now chairs the collaborative KT-Box programme aimed at developing operational tools from the service research. With a background in systems' design, Paul also has appointments as a Visiting Professor in Integrated Systems Design at Cranfield University and the University of Kent under the Royal Academy of Engineering scheme. His particular focus at Cranfield University is to support development of a new initiative in maintenance systems and technology. BackgroundPaul is a professional engineer and has undertaken a number of engineering leadership roles government and industry covering, research, consultancy and manufacturing businesses gaining experience across all phases of the lifecycle at both "whole system" and equipment level. He has held engineering responsibility for the design and support of capital systems, most notably acting as Chief Engineer for the support service for the UK's Vanguard Class submarines before leading the design of the UK Astute Class. Paul has led systems research with government and undertaken new product development within a small "own equipment manufacturer". Paul’s most recent "operational" role was as Engineering Director for BAE Systems' naval support business after which he then worked as the Company’s programme director for research into Service and Support Engineering with the University of Cambridge and others engaged in the EPSRC supported "S4T" programme (Support Service Solutions, Strategy and Transition). This was aimed at developing a perspective on Service applicable to "Product Service Systems" for complex engineering products – whilst defence-centric the research is equally applicable to other sectors where service relies on the effective sustainment of complex, high integrity systems: petro-chemical, mass transportation, healthcare. The research programme to date has been based within the IfM but involves the Engineering Design Centre and Judge Business School at Cambridge and a number of other academic collaborators. Development of a Global perspective on services is developing with the IfM's 2007 discussion paper "Succeeding through Service Innovation" (with IBM) and the emerging Cambridge Service Alliance. |
