Dr Maria Holgado Granados
Maria Holgado joined the Centre for Industrial Sustainability in October 2014. She is currently the lead researcher on the Energy and Resource Management Systems for Improved Efficiency in the Process Industries (MAESTRI) project, funded by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 programme. The project aims to contribute to the adoption of energy and resource efficiency improvement strategies by creating both concepts and tools which will be tested in four real industrial settings. Maria’s work will revolve around the concept of Industrial Symbiosis, focusing on material and energy exchanges in the process industries.
Maria has been involved in the REDRESS project, funded by Innovate UK, which aims at investigating opportunities to increase the volume and value of textile recovery and driving retained value through business model and supply chain innovation.
Maria has also participated in the European project SustainValue, Sustainable Value Creation in Manufacturing Networks, funded by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project aim was to develop industrial models, solutions and performance standards for new sustainable and more performing production and service networks.

Maria completed a PhD from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy in 2014. Her PhD research examined how industrial maintenance can serve as an enabler for practicing more sustainable manufacturing operations through the provision of industrial services. Her PhD thesis, “Sustainable value creation in manufacturing through maintenance services”, was granted the mention of Thesis of Excellence by the Italian Maintenance Association (AIMAN) and the Best PhD Thesis Award in Maintenance by the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies (EFNMS) in 2016.
Maria is a Manufacturing Engineer, graduated at University of Seville, Spain. She has been also a Teaching Assistant in a MSc course on Design and Management of Production Systems. She has worked in the area of maintenance management for 6 years. She has been a Marie-Curie Research Fellow in the European project iMaPla “Integrated Maintenance Planning” in University Federico Santa Maria in Valparaíso, Chile, and a Visiting Scholar at the Intelligent Maintenance Systems Center in University of Cincinnati, US.
