Projects

Project work in collaborating companies takes up 40% of the year and forms the backbone of ISMM.

Subjects range from redesigning a water wheel for local power generation in Sri Lanka to proposing a more efficient scheduling system for a precision die-casting company.

Each project deals with a live issue relevant to the company. The task is described in a one-page brief and the projects are allocated on the basis of the graduates' voting preferences. The work is supervised by the company concerned and you behave as if you were a company employee.

At the end of each project the team, normally two graduates, explains its findings in a formal presentation and follows this up with a comprehensive written report.

Titles from this year's induction projects included:

  • 'Improving Time-to-Market in R&D'
  • 'Stock Holding and Control'
  • 'Cost Reduction in Welding Wire Production'
  • 'Stock Profile Monitoring'
  • 'Intranet Use'
  • 'Effective Maintenance'
  • 'Schedule Change Improvement'
  • 'Layout of New Production Area'
  • 'Driver Communication'.
