Software Sourcing Interest GroupWelcome to the SSIG area This site is intended for practitioners and academics who are interested in the issues of sourcing software for product offerings. The site is developed as part of an EPSRC funded research project aimed at developing a practical guide for approaching such software sourcing decisions. OverviewSoftware is used to provide product functionality, and can be found increasingly in a variety of products from cars and washing machines to mobile phones and audio systems. Deciding whether to develop software inhouse or to find a partner to develop it can be a difficult decision. It touches on business issues of core competence, competitive advantage and intellectual property. It touches on technical issues such as how easy it is to transfer relevant knowledge. It touches on supplier selection issues of assessing software development competence and organisational fit. And it needs attention to the detail of how the project is organised.
