Emergence and Growth of High-tech Activity in Cambridge and Grenoble
Druilhe, C. and Garnsey, E. Centre for Technology Management, Institute for Manufacturing, Engineering Department, University of Cambridge, UK AbstractThis paper compares the genesis and the growth of two well-known European high-technology centres, Cambridge in the United Kingdom and Grenoble in France. It attempts to explain why, despite strong differences in terms of initial conditions, Cambridge and Grenoble present similarities, sometimes striking, related to the creation of the respective science park and the development of high-tech activities in the wider area. The comparison is based on an historical analysis and on the principles of ecological succession.
