Integrating Supply Chains with Technology RoadmappingD. Beeton, D. Probert and R. Phaal Centre for Technology Management, Institute for Manufacturing, Engineering Department, University of Cambridge, UK AbstractThe transformation of raw materials into a final consumer product requires the integration of a series of value-adding activities that are invariably performed by a number of different companies. The coordination and optimisation of these inter-organisational activities represents a considerable managerial challenge, with a specific difficulty being the complexity of linking different companies and business functions. This paper explores how technology roadmapping can reconcile these difficulties. This is achieved through description of the key considerations and benefits associated with developing a collaborative roadmapping activity, and by description of a series of workshops that brought together delegates from different companies and business functions to develop a high-level roadmap for the packaging sector. These examples illustrate specific areas in which roadmapping can support the management of inter-organisational processes, namely: structuring inter-organisational relationships, improving communication and facilitating organisational learning, and enabling different strategic perspectives to be incorporated into a planning process.
