Assessment of Technology Management Processes - development of a practical approach within an industrial context.

Abstract

The need for an integrated framework for technology management, linked to practical tools for analysis and improvement of industrial practice, is widely recognised.

This paper describes an approach intended to address this need. It is based on a five process model for the management of technology, where the processes are: identification, selection, acquisition, exploitation and protection. It is proposed that such a model will give useful results for industrialists by providing comprehensiveness, coherence and comparability.

To support this model, the paper examines current industrial opinion and experience for evidence of its validity. The empirical data comes from an industrial forum held on each of the processes in the model. The issues raised are detailed and conclusions are drawn out for the accuracy of the model and its future use as a tool supporting both research and industrial practice.

Building on this evidence of industrial relevance, the paper describes and draws conclusions from two pilot applications of a technology management process 'assessment tool' (or audit) within UK manufacturing companies. The assessment methodology, based on the five process model, is described briefly at each stage of development. The learning achieved by the companies and the researchers during the pilot applications is summarised, and the paper concludes by reflecting upon the evolutionary nature of the research approach adopted.
