Developing Practical Processes for Technology ManagementJohn N Skilbeck and David R ProbertCambridge University Manufacturing GroupAbstractThe challenge of managing technology effectively is becoming increasingly complex. New technologies are generated diversely and internationally at ever greater expense; complex fusions of technology provide new opportunities but require breadth of vision; skill lifecycles associated with understanding and acquiring new technology are increasing while product lifecyles shorten. Joint ventures and partnerships offer opportunities to share the costs of technology development and exploitation but require significant management effort and raise issues of ownership and protection of intellectual property. Whilst some companies have made significant in-roads into harnessing the opportunities which technology affords, the management of technology within businesses remains a 'hit-and miss' affair for many. No clear framework for technology management appears to exist and tools for analysing the business impact of technology are fragmented and lack detailed guidelines for application. In this paper we describe a framework for understanding technology management within the business in terms of the fundamental processes at work. This framework provides the context for the development of practical tools to assess and improve technology management practice. |
