Structuring a systematic approach to technology management: concepts and practice

R Phaal, CJP Farrukh and DR Probert

Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, CB2 1RX, UK

Abstract

Whilst the business relevance of technology management is undeniable and growing, the conceptual basis of the subject is fragmented and ill defined. This paradox represents a major threat to the further development of this important multi-disciplinary field. In the face of pressing practitioner demand, a lack of coherent theoretical foundation can lead to a proliferation of empirically based solutions, some of which may be in conflict with each other.

Recent work in the Centre for Technology Management at the University of Cambridge has sought to combine the development of practically useful tools and techniques, which address recognised technology management problems at the firm level, with an integrating conceptual framework. The intent is that this framework should serve as the means to ensure that the results of tool application are cumulative and beneficial rather than conflicting. The link between technology management approaches and other interventions designed to address the business problems facing a firm should be clear.

The paper outlines the general requirements and characteristics of such a framework, together with the example framework that is emerging from this work. The link to other representations of technology management, and the manner in which it supports the application of practical tools is discussed with reference to technology roadmapping.
