Technology and innovation management
Three-day course
This three-day course comprises a stimulating mix of taught modules, discussion, cases and practical activities, together with pre-reading and pre-module 'audit'. There is also an opportunity for continuing support from participation in an active network of industrialists and academics.
Topics include: introduction to technology and innovation management, frameworks and models, technology audit, innovation and new product introduction, strategic technology management, technology roadmapping for innovation and strategy, open innovation, make-or-buy, partnerships and alliances, venturing, intellectual property management.
Several topics on this course are run as individual courses one-day courses, see below:
Strategic roadmapping
A fast start approach to align markets, products and technology
One-day and two-day courses
Interactive course focusing on the practical application of ‘T-Plan’, a faststart technology roadmapping process developed at the IfM, an acknowledged centre of expertise in this field. Roadmapping (also known as route mapping) is increasingly seen as a key management tool, enabling companies to link technological capability to product and business plans so that technology and strategy go hand-in-hand. The technique has been found to be extremely useful to businesses of all sizes and types who wish to plan their route into the future.
Open innovation
One-day workshops
Innovation is an increasingly distributed process, involving networks of geographically dispersed players with a variety of possible - and dynamic - value chain configurations. Our research in this area is focused on helping companies understand and overcome these challenges. The workshop will give participants an overview of the key issues in open innovations, alongside three case studies.
Make-or-buy, are you getting it right?
One-day course
Finite resources and global competition are forcing manufacturing businesses to review the make-or-buy question. Companies increasingly need to focus on those processes, technologies and components that are strategically important to their business. A structured and rational approach to the make-or buy issue is therefore essential. This event describes practical tools to address specific sourcing decisions and presents case studies showing how these tools have been implemented in companies.
Technology intelligence Monitoring science and technology developments
One day workshop
A well-designed technology intelligence system - to collect, analyse and disseminate the most pertinent information needed for strategic decision making - is a vital capability to identify potential threats and opportunities. This is particularly true as technology lifecycles shorten and business becomes more global. This workshop provides participants with an overview of the current key issues in this field, gives examples of leading practice and provides practical guidelines for setting-up their own technology intelligence system.
Valuing and selecting technology projects
One day workshop
This workshop will explore techniques applicable at different stages of the project life cycle, including both new approaches and established techniques. The results of recent research concerning value roadmapping and Decision Tree analysis will be included, illustrated by examples and case studies. The workshop will be of particular interest to those involved in selecting technology projects or in valuing and championing new business initiatives where uncertainty is high.
Cambridge Technology Management Symposium
Annual industrial and academic symposium
Organised by the University of Cambridge, Centre for Technology Management this annual two day symposium, running since 1993, is a firm fixture for those at the forefront of new ideas and practical application in the field. Aimed principally at an audience of senior technology and innovation managers from companies of all sizes, it draws on leading practice and research to address the current key issues in an international context.
Executive education
Many of the IfM's courses can be run on an in-company basis with modules tailored to address the issues facing a particular organisation and adapted to suit the level of management concerned. Please enquire for details.
