Measuring the value creation of knowledge management programs

Introduction

Knowledge management has been a thriving topic in research recently. Many companies are introducing their own knowledge management programs, mostly IT-based. However, passed research has shown a lack of understanding of the linkage between knowledge management practices and underpinning business value. Benchmarking, performance measurement and intellectual capital are used to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of knowledge management at the organizational level, however, tools for measurement the value-creation of individual knowledge management program are still needed.

We believe that knowledge management programs benefit organisation by increasing its organisational capability for knowledge sharing. A framework for modelling the organisational capability has been developed, serving as the intermediate outcome between knowledge management programs and operational performance. Based on the framework, a methodology is developed as a tool for guiding the measurement.

Research aim

To develop a framework to conceptualize the linkage between knowledge management programs and the business value creation.

To produce a practical methodology as a tool for measuring the business value creation of knowledge management programs.

Applications

A comprehensive methodology for measuring the value creation of knowledge management programs is developed, based on our framework, and has been tested in case studies in organizational context.
