Managing Strategic Investments: Toward a Resource Allocation and Analysis Tool (SIRAT)

Academic and Industrial Context

Making a decision on strategic investments is not easy, as not all investment would turn out to be successful. Given a fixed amount of resource, and a wide range of promising new processes, methods, and systems, how could a company decide in which to invest? Knowledge-based systems have long been widely applied in supporting complex decision analysis. This research utilises a hybrid knowledge-based system of Fuzzy Logic, Rule-Based Reasoning, and Case-Based Reasoning to support managers in making optimal strategic investment decisions.

Aims and Objectives

This research aims to develop and test a resource allocation and analysis tool for managing strategic investments. The specific objectives of the research are to:

  • Develop a knowledge-based system for supporting investment decisions
  • Test the developed knowledge-based system and tool in a range of companies

The research will be conducted in collaboration with Professor Chee Peng Lim of the University Science Malaysia .

Deliverables

The principal deliverables of the project, derived from a series of case studies, will be:

  • A knowledge-based system for resource allocation and analysis
  • A practitioner deliverable in the form of a workbook describing in detail the developed tool and process, and how it should be applied and operated in practice
